The Nye County, Nev., recorder’s office sent out an alert that a LifeLock software glitch was causing false fraud alerts related to some Nevada properties inside and outside of Nye County. Some alerts were received by people who did not own any property in the state.
The recorder’s office said LifeLock, an identity theft protection company, was aware of the issue and is working to resolve it..
Maine Registers of Deeds Association President Cherri Crockett told a local news team that her office was flooded with calls from confused people from out of state who received the false alert. In one case, a LifeLock customer in Texas received an email about a “new property record” in Bethel, Maine, that he did not own.
LifeLock told the news team that the issue was due to an error by a vendor responsible for processing public data.
Nye County Recorder Deborah Beatty encouraged residents who received a notification from LifeLock about a property in Nye County to verify the information by searching for recorded documents in the recorder’s office.
