By definition, it can be difficult to prepare for the unexpected. That’s no excuse to lack reasonable safeguards, however.
Disasters can take many shapes and form – from inclement weather to viral outbreaks and beyond – and no business is exempt from the risk. That’s why Jaime Kosofsky, founding partner of real estate law practice Brady & Kosofsky, looks to help colleagues in the industry increase the disaster readiness of their companies.
At the upcoming National Settlement Services Summit (NS3) conference, Kosofsky is scheduled to take part in a panel discussion titled “Earth Wind and Fire: Retaining Business Continuity Through Disasters.” He hopes that title agents, compliance attorneys and other interested professionals that attend the discussion learn to cover all their bases.
“Be prepared for disasters of all types and sizes which could affect your ability to do business,” Kosofksy told The Legal Description. “It’s not just the fires, the wind, and pandemics, but it’s the forecast for a snowstorm (if you live in the south), it’s a gas leak, a closed road, power outage, etc...”
Kosofsky adds that disaster recovery is especially relevant – and growing more relevant by the year – considering the wildfires that impacted the greater Los Angeles area earlier this year, as well as the ever-present threat of wind damage and flooding that comes with hurricane season.
“In North Carolina alone, we had major damage from a hurricane, fire, a snowstorm forecast and flooding,” he said. “I have been living in a state of disaster recovery since 2019. It sucks, but it’s important to plan for.”
Regardless of the region NS3 attendees hail from and the most common hazardous conditions they’re most likely to deal with back home, Kosofksy hopes they’ll walk away from the session with “a sense of urgency that having plans in place is not optional.”
Kosofsky will be joined on the panel by two executives from Title Insurance Consultants; Founder and Owner Brie McDaniel, and Owner Kay Underwood-Zach.
This year’s NS3 takes place June 16-18 in Pittsburgh, Penn. For more information on NS3, including the agenda for all three days and how to register, click here.
