California Gov. Gavin Newsom has named Khalil Mohensi as the new commissioner of the state’s Department of Financial Protection and Innovation (DFPI).
Mohensi previously served as the DFPI’s chief deputy director, a position he held since 2023. Prior to that, Mohensi was chief operating officer at the state controller’s office from 2022 to 2023, and he was the deputy director of administration at the California Department of Housing and Community Development from 2020 to 2022.
Mohseni also has experience with the California Business, Consumer Services and Housing Agency, where he worked as project director of business from 2018 to 2019. He was also the chief fiscal officer at the Board of State and Community Corrections from 2015 to 2018.
Mohseni earned a JD from the University of California, Davis School of Law, and a bachelor of arts degree in political science from the University of California, Irvine. This position requires Senate confirmation and the compensation is $224,868, according to a press release. Mohseni is registered without party preference.
