District Attorney David Hoovler of Orange County, N.Y. announced on Feb. 24 that Meghan Henesy of Panama City, Fla. pleaded guilty to grand larceny in the second degree, admitting to stealing $127,000 from a title insurance company she used to work for.
As part of Henesy’s plea agreement, the prosecution recommends that she be sentenced to between two and six years in prison and ordered to pay $127,000 in restitution when she is sentenced by the Orange County Court on June 4.
Henesy, who was a bookkeeper and office manager for a title insurance company in Wallkill, N.Y., fraudulently obtained more than $127,000 from the company between 2020 and 2022, according to court documents. The methods of the theft included Henesy writing checks to herself, forging documents and falsifying business records to disguise personal expenditures as legitimate business expenses.
“This defendant was placed in a position of trust and abused that trust to enrich herself,” Hoovler said in a press release. “The staggering amount of money that this defendant stole demands significant punishment. That the defendant took efforts to cover up her crimes further compounds her culpability. But for the exhaustive and painstaking investigation by the New York State Police in conjunction with my office, this defendant might very well have avoided apprehension. Thankfully, instead, her crimes were uncovered and she was held accountable.”
