Acting Maryland Insurance Commissioner Marie Grant named Joy Hatchette as deputy commissioner of the Maryland Insurance Administration (MIA).
Since 2004, Hatchette has served as the associate commissioner for the MIA’s consumer education and advocacy unit, overseeing outreach to Maryland consumers to help them understand their rights and obligations under their insurance policies.
From July to September this year, Hatchette served as MIA’s interim commissioner during the search for a new commissioner.
“Joy’s professionalism and extensive knowledge of our agency’s operations are a true asset," Grant said. “Her leadership over the years has helped define the MIA as a national leader in consumer protection and education. I look forward to working closely with Joy to help make a great agency even better.”
Hatchette also served as the MIA’s associate commissioner for consumer complaints from 1997-2004 and as the agency’s assistant attorney general from 1993-1997.
In 2016, Hatchette was appointed to the Maryland Commission on Aging and served two four-year terms. She was one of 13 members charged with reviewing programs and activities for older adults and making program recommendations to the Maryland secretary of aging.
She is a graduate of the University of Virginia Law School and is a member of the bar associations in Maryland, Virginia, and the District of Columbia.
