The American Land Title Association alerted members to a spoofed membership email, appearing to come from the association, that asks members to review a PDF of its membership directory to ensure the information is correct.
In the notice alerting members to delete the phishing email, ALTA states the subject line reads “Changes & Updates to Member Directory.”
The spoof email states, “In order to create a unified Member list, we have come up with a database of active ALTA Members and Vendors. This is to help members have statewide access to each other, to assist new Realtors for mentorship purposes and education while also maintaining professional ethics and standards.”
It asks members to look through the linked PDF to ensure their contact information, ALTA ID, State Chapter and active Contact Number are correct.
The alert from ALTA informs members that it has contacted the company that the sender’s domain is from, as well as Rackspace — the mail server/hosting company where the email was sent from.
“ALTA encourages you to delete the email. Do not open the PDF. In addition, you should block the domain of the email or the IP address that it is coming from. Once the scammers catch on, they will likely switch email domains,” the alert stated.
ALTA assured members that their information is safe and that its system was not breached.
